This report is written as a part of the bachelor education at Aarhus School of Maritime and Technical Engineering.
The report is based on a design project that Glenco A/S has offered GM Plast A/S. Glenco A/S has offered to replace the old cooling units operating on the refrigerant R22 with new energy efficient cooling units. The new cooling solution deals with free cooling with air combined with air cooled liq-uid chiller. The cooling units that are described in the project are a part of a new solution that com-plies with the present legislation in Denmark.
The report deals with different ways of controlling the fan speed on the same free cooling unit with the purpose of reaching the most power efficient solution. The first solution covers the energy effi-ciency by using delta-star switching. The rotation speed on the fans is thereby reduced in two steps and gives a lower free cooling performance but also lower power consumption. In certain situations the delta connection is more energy efficient than the star connection and vice versa. This is deter-mined by the instantaneous cooling demand and will be discussed based on a particular day with various outdoor temperatures.
The other solution covers the energy efficiency by using variable fan speed regulation. The fans regu-lates to a certain rotation speed that is determined by the instantaneous cooling demand. This pro-vides even lower power consumption due to better adjustment of the fan speed. Likewise the first solution this will be discussed based on the same day.
These two solutions provide different power consumption during the same day. The energy con-sumptions forms the basis of a daily saving compared to the present energy consumption.
