This Bachelor report is written by Bjørn Arthur Hansen, in the final semester of the education, as a Marine and Technical Engineer, at Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering. The report has been written in corporation with DS NORDEN A/S. This report is intended as a guide for the shipping company, to help DS NORDEN A/S finding the subjects that needs special attention regarding Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) intended for M/T Nord Hummock.
The report and subject is inspired through an internship of 10 weeks onboard M/T Nord Hummock. The information is gathered through experience onboard, theoretical experience and company visits with handout sales material.
Ballast water pose serious ecological problems due to the multitude of marine species carried in the ships` ballast water. Microorganisms, eggs and various species of sea life are transported to unnatural environments where they have no natural enemies, and therefore multiply and evolve in ways damaging to the environment.
Due to this problem, International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a convention that requires all ships to implement a BWTS to clean the water from unwanted organisms.
The report has focus on the oil tanker M/T Nord Hummock and will help clarify the issues the shipping company faces in the selection and implementation of a new BWTS for this particular ship. Some of the main issues are physical installation, required capacity, Aft Peak tank, certification, worldwide service and crew training. The emphasis is to guide the shipping company through these issues.
The ship’s construction and existing ballast water system will be processed and analyzed to clarify if the ballast system requires large modifications such as new piping or new ballast pumps. Furthermore the ships energy capacity and placing possibilities for the new BWTS will be analyzed, and the report will provide the reader with basic knowledge of different cleaning methods, and give a thorough insight in to specific treatment systems from two well-known manufacturers, who has production- or service facilities located not only in Denmark, but all over the World. The report concludes that the shipping company needs to take M/T Nord Hummock´s restrictions and possibilities under consideration when a BWTS is to be chosen, furthermore the placement of the new system is an important issue which the company needs to consider and find in cooperation with marine classification organizations and BWTS suppliers. |
